Various Kinds of Locks

What’s one of the most common ways to secure property? Locks! They come in all shapes, sizes and types. Sometimes they’re even made so they’re extremely mobile. This way, you can carry them around with you.

Residential Locks

There are many varieties of residential locks that you can install on your property. Whether they’re for your exterior doors, interior doors, windows, garage doors and even your fences, there are quite a few options to choose from.

Here are a few residential locks that you may be interested in.

  • Deadbolts

This is possibly the most common type of lock that you’ll find on residential properties. They’re durable, reasonably priced and offer a lot of security. There are several varieties too. So, the one you choose for your home is largely based on your personal preference.

  • Single cylinder

Many homeowners prefer this type of deadbolt because it only needs a key to be opened on one side. This would be the exterior of the door. The inner side typically has a latch that is spun so the lock can be engaged.

  • Double cylinder

For this type, you’ll need a key to open the lock on both sides. This makes them much more inconvenient to use and it also makes them a safety hazard. As a result, you must be very careful with your keys if you have this type of lock installed. Some people will even find it a much better option not to have these locks on their door.

  • Jimmy proof deadbolt

This deadbolt, although similar in how it operates, is quite different because of how it’s installed. It’s possible the easiest deadbolt to install and that makes it a preferred choice for many homeowners.

  • Knob locks

Knob locks are quite versatile in their use. They can be used on both exterior and interior doors. Generally, when they’re found on exterior doors, they’re accompanied by a deadbolt or some other lock that’s more secure. But, on interior doors, they’re often the only means of securing the room.

  • Furniture locks

As the name suggests, furniture locks are made to be used on different types of furniture. Whether desks, cabinets or drawers, you may find several types of these locks around your home. They come in many sizes too.

Commercial Locks

Some business owners secure their property with locks that can also be used on residential properties. It’s quite common actually, as many of these locks are meant for both purposes. However, there are a few locks that you’ll find primarily in commercial properties.

  • Lever handle lock

Used mostly for interior doors, you’ll find lever handle locks in many places of business. They tend to offer a lower level of security, but they’re very reliable and durable. You may also notice them in residential properties as they are designed to be used for both types of properties.

  • Vending/ T-handle lock

There’s no need to wonder what these locks are used for. The name says it all. They’re shaped like a ‘T’ and you can find them on most vending machines that are accessible by the public.

  • Mortise and Rim cylinder locks

Although these locks have striking physical resemblance, they’re quite different. But, they tend to be used for similar purposes. You may have noticed them on glass doors before. They’re often quite small and they’re don’t offer a great deal of protection.

  • Cam locks

Want to secure a cabinet or desk in an office? Then a cam lock may be what you need. It’s a small, low-level furniture lock that offers enough protection to keep intruders out of your desks and cabinets.

  • Wall mounted locks

Do you know what a fireman’s box is? It’s a wall mounted lock that has a key inside. They may not be as common as many other types of locks. But, they’re definitely commercial grade and used on commercial properties.

Automotive Locks

You may think that there isn’t a lot of variety when it comes to the locks on your car, truck or van. That’s far from the truth. Even with automobiles, you’ll still find variation in the types of locks used. Here are a few.

  • Glove compartment locks

The glove compartment in your car has always been intended for storage. That’s why it has its own lock. In some vehicles, you have to use a separate key while in others, you can use the same key that opens the door.

  • Steering wheel locks

For added protection, you can purchase a steering wheel lock for your vehicle. Unlike the standard locks that come with your vehicle, this lock has to be purchased completely separate.

  • Standard key entry locks for car doors and trunks

This is the lock that you have to open to get in your car. While newer models may not have this type of lock, most older vehicles use them. They’re simple to use too.

Keyless Locks

Within each category mentioned, there are many other types of locks. One that spans all three categories is the keyless lock. As you’ll see from the name, you don’t need a key to open it. This is actually what makes it one of the most secure locks on the market today. But, this level of security tends to come with a high price tag. So, you’ll find that keyless locks tend to be much more expensive than many other locks on the market.
