What is a Transponder Chip? Does My Key Have One? 

A transponder chip is a special type of microchip that is fitted into the head of a vehicle key and communicates with the engine when you insert that key into the ignition lock. This communication takes place using radio frequency and happens in less than a second, allowing your vehicle to fire up. Keyless entry systems may also take advantage of transponder key technology by having a similar chip in the remote key fob that you use to lock and unlock your doors. If your car key’s head is encased in plastic, it probably has a transponder chip inside.  Transponder chips don’t have anything to do with unlocking and locking your doors, just starting your engine.
